About this project
Twelve animals was never enough
Most spirit animal quizzes give you one animal per zodiac sign. Twelve animals for
roughly eight billion people. I took one of those quizzes and was told I was a wolf, and so
was the friend sitting next to me, who is nothing like me in any way I can identify. We had
been born five weeks apart. That was the whole basis of it.
Zodiac & Soul is what came of that irritation. It crosses your zodiac sign with your
personality type, which gives twelve signs multiplied by sixteen types, or
192 distinct spirit animals. Every one has its own written entry: who you
are, how the real creature lives, and what people have told each other about it.
How it works
Eight questions, no sign-up, no email address, and nothing stored. The quiz runs entirely
in your browser and your answers never reach a server. It takes about two minutes and gives
you one animal out of 192 rather than one out of twelve.
What is actually in an entry
Each of the 192 animals has a description written for that specific combination of sign
and type, a natural history section about how the real animal lives, a note on its mythology,
three defining traits and the signs it sits most easily with. The natural history is the part
that took longest. Nearly every animal here is a real species, from the Nubian ibex to the
saola, and a handful are creatures of legend where the sign's own symbol demanded it.
Browse by sign
Each sign has its own page with three of its sixteen animals revealed, the traditional
astrology behind it, and why that particular family of creatures was chosen.
Behind the bestiary
I write about how this thing gets researched and revised in
Field Notes — including
how the 192 were chosen,
the ones that are extinct or nearly so,
and why there is deliberately no compatibility
calculator. The mistakes are in there too.
