People are quick to tell me that astrology is not science and that MBTI is not much better. They are right on both counts, and it has never bothered me, because I was not trying to build a science. I was trying to build a better mirror.

What each one is actually good at

Astrology and personality typing get lumped together as the same kind of thing, pseudoscience for people who like thinking about themselves. But they fail in opposite directions, and that turns out to matter.

Astrology is broad and symbolic. Your sign is a season, an element, a set of old associations that have accumulated meaning over centuries. It says nothing testable about your behaviour, and it hands the same twelve descriptions to eight billion people. What it is good at is imagery. It gives you a lion, a scorpion, a pair of scales, and those images carry a weight that a four-letter code never will.

Personality typing runs the opposite way. It is narrow and behavioural. Whatever you think of the Myers-Briggs framework, and there is plenty to criticise, it is at least trying to describe how you actually operate: how you make decisions, where your attention goes, what drains you and what restores you. What it is terrible at is resonance. Nobody has ever felt a shiver of recognition at being told they are an ISTP. It is a filing code, not a symbol.

The one-line version

Astrology gives you an image with no behaviour behind it. Personality type gives you behaviour with no image attached. Each is missing exactly what the other has.

What happens when you cross them

The moment I put them on two axes I had a grid, and the grid did something neither system does alone. It got specific.

A Scorpio is a broad thing. A Scorpio ISTP is a much narrower one: the intensity and privacy of the sign, aimed through the hands-on, unbothered, quietly capable temperament of the type. Suddenly there is enough detail to describe a person rather than a category, and enough of the symbolic left over to attach an animal that feels earned rather than assigned.

Twelve signs times sixteen types is 192 cells. That is not eight billion, but it is a great deal better than twelve, and it is fine-grained enough that reading your own cell does not feel like reading a horoscope written for everyone.

On not believing in it

I should be straight about this, because I think it is the honest position and because pretending otherwise would undermine the whole site. I do not think your birth month determines your personality. I do not think a four-letter code captures the whole of anyone. I am not asking you to believe either of those things.

What I think these systems are is a structured way of looking at yourself, and structure is genuinely useful even when the underlying claims are shaky. A good description makes you pause on something true that you had not put into words. It does that regardless of whether Mars was anywhere in particular when you were born. The value is in the noticing, not in the mechanism.

This is also why every description on the site is written to be a mirror rather than an instruction. It tells you what you might be like and lets you decide whether it fits. It never tells you what to do, because the moment a system like this starts issuing instructions it is claiming an authority it has not got.

Why the animal matters more than either system

Here is the part I did not expect when I started. The animal ended up doing more work than the sign or the type.

When I tell you that you are a Gemini ENTP, that lands as two labels you have heard before. When I tell you that you are the raven that stole fire, something different happens. The animal carries the meaning in a form you can actually hold. It is the reason I spent so long finding the right creature for each of the 192 cells rather than just writing 192 paragraphs. The sign and the type are the coordinates. The animal is the thing you remember.

So the two systems people love to dismiss are, in the end, scaffolding. Useful scaffolding, chosen because between them they cover both halves of the problem, but scaffolding. What you walk away with is an animal, and a few hundred words of natural history about why it is yours. Whether the stars had anything to do with it is, I think, beside the point.

If you have not yet, you can find your own. It takes about two minutes, and the worst case is that you disagree with it, which is its own kind of useful.

I write and research the Zodiac & Soul bestiary, all 192 entries of it, one animal at a time. More about the project.

Field Notes is where I write about how this bestiary gets researched, argued over and revised. More entries in Deep Dives.
